Introduction

These are exciting times for K-12 education in the United States. While the industry continues to battle the achievement gap between rich and poor, we’ve never had more powerful tools to close it than we do today. The digital revolution has made information - the stuff of learning - more readily available than ever. Schools are bringing new tools - computers, smart boards, software & the Internet - into the classroom, and achievement is going up as a result.

And yet we’ve got a long way to go. First, we need to make the digital transition faster, and we have to do it cheaper. Second, and at least as important, we need to make sure we don’t leave people behind, and widen a digital divide between rich and poor that is already causing damage.
